MASTER of Life and Death by ROBERT SILVERBERG - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/50441/pg50441-images.html

By the 23rd century Earth's population had reached seven billion.

Walton frowned. Too many of the public speeches of the day were synthetic, created by skilled engineers who split words into their component phonemes and reassembled them in any shape they pleased.

At this very moment a team of engineers is on Venus, in that hot, dry, formaldehyde atmosphere, struggling to turn Venus into a world fit for oxygen-breathing human beings.

There can't be any dignity or nobility in human life with everyone crammed into one sardine can. So I'll treat them like the sardines they are, and hope I can turn them into the human beings they could be if they only had room.

THE LEADER By MURRAY LEINSTER - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/23612/pg23612-images.html

... The career of The Leader remains one of the mysteries of history. This man, illegitimate and uneducated, hysterical and superstitious, gathered about him a crowded following of those who had been discontented, but whom he turned into fanatics. Apparently by pure force of personality he seized without resistance the government of one of the world's great nations. So much is unlikely enough. But as the ruler of a civilized country he imposed upon its people the absolute despotism of a primitive sultanate. He honeycombed its society with spies. He imprisoned, tortured, and executed without trial or check. And while all this went on he received the most impassioned loyalty of his subjects! Morality was abandoned at his command with as much alacrity as common sense. He himself was subject to the grossest superstitions. He listened to astrologers and fortunetellers—and executed them when they foretold disaster. But it is not enough to be amazed at the man himself. The great mystery is that people of the Twentieth Century, trained in science and technically advanced, should join in this orgy of what seems mere madness ...

The Legion Of Lazarus By Edmond Hamilton - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/32486/pg32486-images.html

Being expelled from an air lock into deep space was the legal method of execution. But it was also the only way a man could qualify for—The Legion Of Lazarus

Another part of his mind. That was strange. There seemed to be more parts to his mind than he remembered having had before, but they were all confused and hidden behind a veil of mist. Perhaps they were not really there at all. Perhaps—

Fifty years. I have been dead, he thought, and now I live again. Half a century. Strange.

Bad Medicine by Robert Sheckley - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/9055/pg9055-images.html

On May 2, 2103, Elwood Caswell walked rapidly down Broadway with a loaded revolver hidden in his coat pocket. He didn't want to use the weapon, but feared he might anyhow. This was a justifiable assumption, for Caswell was a homicidal maniac.

The Wailing Asteroid by Murray Leinster - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/50022/pg50022-images.html

There was no life on the asteroid, but the miles of rock-hewn corridors through which the earth party wandered left no doubt about the purpose of the asteroid.

It was a mighty fortress, stocked with weapons of destruction beyond man's power to understand.

And yet there was no life here, nor had there been for untold centuries.

What race had built this stronghold? What unimaginable power were they defending against? Why was it abandoned? There was no answer, all was dead.

SPACE PLATFORM by Murray Leinster - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/25051/pg25051-images.html

There was no sign of activity anywhere, because the scale was so great. Movement there was, but the things that moved were too small to be seen by comparison with the Shed. The huge, round, shining half-sphere of metal stood tranquilly in the midst of emptiness.

It was bigger than the pyramids

The Space Platform, a tiny sliver of sunshine, an infinitesimal speck of golden light, moved sedately across the deepening blue toward the east. Toward the night.

If You Was a MOKLIN By MURRAY LEINSTER - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/51752/pg51752-images.html

YOU TOO CAN BE A MILLIONAIRE By Noel Loomis - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/32907/pg32907-images.html

Conley was from the Machine—Central Audit Bureau—and the Machine knew by now that Mark was three thousand points in the red. Three thousand points—when you were supposed to be always within one day's point of a balance. You were allowed twelve hundred points a day, so Mark was now two and a half days in debit.

I was born in 1940, you know."

"Nineteen-forty," Mark repeated, wonderingly. "Gee, that was back in the days when everybody worked. I wish I could work."

"Well, it's a changed world," she observed. "In those days, you had to work."

"This is 2021," he observed. "You're eighty-one years old. You must know all about things."

He wondered what she would do with all those points. What did anybody do with them? Everybody had about the same living quarters. Food was furnished by automatic vendors at the Hydroponic Farms. Clothes were provided, ready-made; all you had to do was put your credit card in a machine, punch the buttons for your measurements, and a suit would drop down the chute.

She nodded briskly. "I saw it from one of the last planes. Central covers miles and miles in both directions. They said then it was the biggest machine on earth—and do you know, Mark"—she paused dramatically—"I think the Machine is the government! Roll up your chair, Mark."

Mark did. "But doesn't there have to be somebody to take care of the Machine?" he asked, holding her chair.

"Not that I know of. They said it was perfect—that barring an earthquake it would run for a thousand years without a human hand."

THE PLEASURE AGE By JOED CAHILL - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/69293/pg69293-images.html

October 8, 2866, was a memorable day for young Riley Ashton. It was his sixth birthday. It was the day he got his first good look at American City. Also he learned a new word, a thrillingly naughty word, and Aunt Betty came to live with the Ashtons.

At that time it was the custom all over the world to keep the children secluded in their own homes, or at least in their own neighborhoods, until they were six years old. On his sixth birthday the child, escorted by one or the other of the parents, was taken for his first tour of the city in which he lived.

Excursions of greater length, to other cities and sometimes to other continents, were planned for future birthdays. Like many another convention this custom can not be explained. It was simply the way things were.

"Mother, what does 'work' mean?"

Mrs. Ashton was shocked.

"Riley, where did you hear that dreadful word?"

"It's the automeks," Aunt Betty moaned. "Haven't you heard? They've quit—uh—you know. They just won't go. The agricultural automeks didn't raise any crops last year. The warehouse automeks won't make any deliveries. It's the most horrible thing you ever saw. The people are being forced to leave the city."

The mosquito was known for hundreds of years to be a carrier of disease. Not only was it a carrier, but it was a nuisance because of its habit of sucking blood and leaving irritating welts on its host. The hum of its tiny, fast-moving wings was synonymous with discomfort. Fortunately the last of these pests was exterminated in the year two thousand three hundred and fifty-five."

The next picture and description was of a grasshopper, extinct, so the legend explained, since 2318. The grasshopper was characterized as a destroyer of crops.

The 13th Immortal By ROBERT SILVERBERG - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/65538/pg65538-images.html

As well as being the chief city of Argentina Province, Buenos Aires was a Ducal capital—the first such city Kesley remembered having entered.

He knew the names of the others: Chicago, Tunis, Johannesburg, Stockholm, Canberra, Strasbourg, Kiev, Hankow, Calcutta, Manila, Leopoldville. They were strange and alien names; to him, abstract symbols of Ducal power rather than concrete geographical localities.

Kesley had seen mutants before: mutant horses, mutant wolves, other products of ravaged genes, but he had never before been this close to a human sport, other than Miguel. Miguel was human in all physical aspects save his life span; the creature shambling toward them now could be called "human" only by the loosest of definitions.

There was one round, orange, doughy mass of a man that looked like some sort of giant fruit, except for the enlarged features and the tiny, stick-like legs and arms that projected from it; nearby, walking in confused circles, was a mutant with a pair of dissimilar writhing heads and an uncountable number of busy legs.

Lazy curlicues of smoke hung wavering in the air above the shacks. Kesley looked around.

Great God, he thought suddenly. They're people!

He rode down into the ghetto, feeling ashamed of his own bodily symmetry and genetic heritage, which seemed abnormal here.

Unwise Child RANDALL GARRETT - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/23335/pg23335-images.html

He was evidently speaking from a pocket phone.

This particular example filled, in every respect, the definition of “beautiful” according to the culture of the white Americo-European subclass of the human race as of anno Domini 2087.

The Depression of 1929-42 couldn’t even begin to compare with The Great Depression of 1986-2000. Every civilized nation on Earth had been hit and hit hard. The resulting governmental collapses would have made the disaster even more complete had not the then Secretary General of the UN, Perrot of Monaco, grabbed the reins of government.
